High fashion photo shoot with Scott Sprague!

Fun Day Mondays!

I've been filling my wonderful Mondays off with amazing photo shoot sessions out at Russell Industrial Center in Detroit.  Not only does this space allow for amazing raw photos due to it's "aged and forgotton" mystique, but it also has been occupied by serveral refined artists.  One of the artists that I have been so fortunate to work with is Scott of Scott Sprague Photography.  His experience with shooting avant garde to high fashion shiek has created such a unique vision to the finished product.

Starting with a story board and examples of photo shoots that we have seen in everything from Vogue to W Magazine, we set the perfect model who we both feel could capture the look.  From there I collect the tones in make up and without copying exactly, try to set the same feel with the hair.  So far we have had great success and I can't wait for the next time we meet up to create more gorgeous editorial work!

Photo shoot at the Botanical Gardens!

Jenna Drudi fashion photoshoot botanical gardens
March 10, 2012

What a perfect way to spend a day during Michigan's winter!  It felt like Miami inside the Botanical Gardens, which made an incredible natural set.

The model was Bonnie Schmitz, six-foot-something of legs!  We laughed every time I had to adjust her hair because she had to duck down so far :)  The photographer was Pele Browner (fantastic eye and energy), clothing designer Ella Sven (amazing eye for set and overall direction), set design Sarah Gibson (so talented for set design),  make up Karess Med and Ish Ledesma (who, with little direction literally turned the shots into perfection!).

Now that I've introduced the team...

I recommend working at the Botanical Garden for any artistic team.  Not only was the temperature amazing but the different plants from the cactus to the bonsai trees (over 200 years old) really gave a different feel and texture to each shot.

The photos are being submitted in hopes to be published!  I'll keep you posted:)

Scissor Candy in Detroit!

Jenna Drudi Scissor Candy stage in Detroit
February 12, 2012

Back in December I received an email asking me to join the first ever Scissor Candy event in Detroit. I was so pumped, and the more I looked in the event (originally based in Philly), the more excited I got!  If you don’t know about Scissor Candy, it’s considered an open chair event, self-described as “a group of progressive hair stylist who came together to bring new energy to the beauty industry through innovative events.” The purpose of the event is to inspire each other in a non-competitive but energetic event.

I was lucky to be joined on stage by some really talented stylists from Ann Arbor and Detroit. The event was organized by Lauren Hershberger of Salon 621, but I worked side-by-side on the stage with Sarah Nitz from Salon Epiphany.

I’ve never had so much fun doing hair, presenting on stage (with a live DJ!), and meeting great stylists. Everyone did such an awesome job!  I think the event was a huge success, and I can’t wait to attend the next one!

The Wedding Party - Ann Arbor!

Jenna Drudi Wedding Party Bride
January 22, 2012

Recently I was part of a team of stylists asked to do hair and make-up for The Wedding Party - Ann Arbor. The Wedding Party’s objective is to connect engaged couples with local vendors in the Ann Arbor area. The event hosted 150 attendees, 40 vendors/sponsors, and (of course) 53 bottles of bubbly.  It’s a really great idea for local vendors to collaborate, as well!

My part in the event was to do hair and make-up for one of the four brides. The gown was provided by The Gown Shop, bouquet by Pot & Box flowers, photos captured by Abby Rose Photography, and the whole event was planned by Viva La Diva events.

There were a few other stylists and make-up artists from Salon Vox who collaborated on the other three brides for the event too.  It was a lot of fun seeing all the hard work come together from hair and make-up to wedding dress and veil!

Handmade Companion Magazine Photo-Shoot

Jenna Drudi Editorial Magazine Photoshoot
January 14, 2012

The Handmade Companion magazine is a brand new magazine that will be published both in print and online. The magazine’s focus is on independent, creative, artistic and handmade items.  The photo-shoot was for an advertisement in the magazine’s February issue - It had a couples-romantic-vintage-valentines feel to it.

The photo-shoot was at AJ's Music Cafe in Ferndale, which very much has that “livingroom”  or “bohemian community” vibe to it. So as you can imagine, it was perfect for a photo-shoot featuring vintage clothing and accessories. The wardrobe for the models was provided by Mother Fletcher's, a vintage shop in Ferndale.

I was able to work with a few different models - one short hair female, one short hair male and one medium length hair female.

For the short hair female style, I fully curled all her hair before pinning it back into a retro style.  The men’s style was slick on the sides with a wave in the front - giving him that Mad Men vibe. With the longer 'do', I opted to create a beehive-esque style, as well as adding a few tiny bows to one side.

There were two other stylists on site: Lauren Hershberger & Tammy Tarcia of Salon 621.  It was great to meet them and work side-by-side with other talented stylists.  In fact, next month I am going to be working with Lauren again for the Scissor Candy show in Detroit.

Racquel Viilo was the sole person in charge of make-up, and she did an awesome job!  Anne Hayman (editor in chief for the magazine, as well as the creator of The Handmade Gift Guide website) was on location to make sure everything went perfectly. The photographer was Ali Saloum Photography, and he was really great at capturing lots of different angles and making sure the lighting was just right.  I look forward to seeing the photos and working with him again!

It was such a great experience to work with a large group of talented professionals!  I look forward to collaborating with them all again soon!

Curl By Definition (Posted on Oribe.Pro)

Jenna Drudi Oribe Curl By Definition
January 9, 2012

I HAVE FOUND IT! As a curly hair stylist myself I am constantly trying to figure out a product that allows for the perfect curl! My perfect curl product is one that has styling memory, shine, and moisture. This is it!

The trick I have found for the perfect application for myself and my curly hair clients is I bring the Curl by Definition to the back bar. Immediately after conditioning and rinsing before grabbing my towel that will rough up VULNERABLE curls I apply a decent amount of Curl by Definition to help protect the hair. Then I remove majority of water with towel and either let my client's beautiful curls air dry or diffuse! MAGICAL results!
